Walking in from Kalākaua Avenue
The International Market Place fronts Kalākaua Avenue, and the luau is staged down on the first level, in the Queens Court under the centre's open-air canopy and its century-old banyan tree.
The hula lesson
Before dinner, cultural activities open the evening, including a hula lesson for anyone who wants to join in.
The shell lei
Every guest is handed a handmade shell lei at check-in, whichever section they've booked.
The buffet opens
Kalua pig with cabbage, teriyaki chicken and a gluten-free Japanese vegetable curry lead the buffet, with rice, noodles, salads and Hawaiian sweet bread alongside, on disposable dishware.
The Polynesian show
The cast takes the stage for a Polynesian show built around hula. Guests often mention noticing shoppers on the mall's upper floors watching the show for free from the balconies above.
The fire knife finale
A fire knife dance closes the night, before the courtyard empties back out into the shopping centre around it.
